Car show, gun fight, ribbon cutting to greet visitors to restored Dodge Theatre

When people walk into the grand opening of the restored Dodge Theatre Saturday, they will be stepping back 59 years into the past.

The theater will re-premiere the 1939 movie "Dodge City" for its grand opening. The movie's original premiere took place April 1, 1939, in the theater.

Theater owner Mike Burkhart is happy to have the film for Saturday's event.

"This movie print of 'Dodge City' is in short supply. We were lucky to get it this time and may not be able to get it again," he said. "So I would advise anyone who wants to see it to come while it's available."

The theater has been completely restored to its original state and will operate as both a cinema and stage with first-run, classic and western movies, as well as dinner theater productions.

"We sure are pleased with the way it looks. We've restored it back to its original grandeur," Burkhart said. "We have replaced seat cushions and covers. We've rebuilt just about everything."

The theater has a coffee shop and Victorian mercantile shop which will be open from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and will show first-run movies, classics and Westerns at times announced.

The theater will also have its own movie line.

It will also be available for parties, seminars and meetings.

Burkhart said he thinks everyone will be pleased with the theater and expects the grand opening to be a success. The event will include an antique car show, a gun fight, can-can dancers and a ribbon cutting by the Dodge City Chamber of Commerce.

"Everybody should expect to have a whole afternoon of a good time," he said.
