History of the Major Theater
Located in Washington, KS

The Major Theater was built by C. A. Swiercinsky in 1936.  The theater was air-conditioned and fully equipped with all the latest devices for motion pictures.  The electrical and neon marquee and display are of the very latest type.  C. A. Swiercinsky came to Washington from Elgin, Kansas in 1921 and bought the Majestic theater, changing its name to the Major when he rebuilt.

Personal story from longtime employee
When Mr. Swiercinsky came to town with his family back in 1921 they wanted to start a "Family Business".  He and his wife Rose started their movie theater in what could be described as a warehouse.  Rose would pop popcorn at home & sell it at the show. When talking movies became popular Charlie rebuilt his film equipment himself & over the years made improvements as needed.

It seems that at one time or another almost everyone I know has worked for Charlie & Rose.  My sister& I both worked for Mom & Pop, as they were called by everyone that ever worked for them.  My sister worked there from 1961 to 1964 and I started in 1964 until 1968.  We both came back in 1971 and worked for them until they sold the theater & retired in the 80's.  Both Charlie & Rose had remained actively involved with the theater right until it was sold.  Image being almost 90 and carrying two cans of film up and down a flight of stairs.

Charlie and Rose were a great asset to Washington and both are still missed by many people, as is the loss of the theater.
