Bowlus Center
During his final illness in 1960, Iola citizen & banker Thomas H. Bowlus wrote a will directing his estate be used to build and equip a fine arts center. He expressed the hope that it would be a facility of which the citizens and, most particularly, the youth could be proud. That dream has been realized.

In just over a third of a century, the Bowlus Center, located in rural southeastern Kansas, has become an organization of regional significance. In the years since the grand opening in 1964, thousands of people have performed on the Bowlus stage. Entertainers of all kinds, from the world famous to the kids next door, have used this marvelous gift. Not only does the Bowlus Center provide quality entertainment for area students and residents, it also provides children's programs, artists in schools, community services like rehearsal and performance space, and features a collection of original artwork that includes works of Birger Sandzen, R.C. Gorman, William Anastazi, and Iola artist, Gary Hawk. Local groups that perform here include the school choral, band and drama ensembles, the Iola Community Theatre, the Iola Area Symphony Orchestra, the Iola City Band, Barbershop Chorus, and more. Others that have graced the Bowlus stage include Marcel Marceau, The Harlem Boys Choir, and the Canadian Brass. Artistic diversity is a key to the Bowlus Center's success.
