McPherson Opera House

In 1929, the Opera House was converted into a movie theater, first called the "Empire" and later named the "Mac". Opened in 1880's
This building originally had two balconies. When this operated as a movie theatre, it was called the Mac Theatre. It had two projection rooms. Built in 1888 now under community restoration. This building, while an opera house, the front of it also served as a courthouse and jail. You would enter through the side for access to the auditorium. Projection was installed in the 1920s.

Grace & Cozy Theaters
(1914-1915) 114 S. Main Green Building south of Maple Tree Grocery Store.  Built on site of Old Star Livery Barn owned by A W Bremyer.   Owned by Hank Collins.  Managed by C E Oelrich.  Grace was later the Isis Theater. 1918 sold to F R Boyce (Roxbury).
 
Tourney Theater
(1918) 106 S. Main Built on site of Grace Theater by J F Tourney (died 1924). Had Balcony and over 200 seats.  Sold to Helstrom (105 S.Main) became Manor Theater in 1943.  Located in the area of Peoples Bank.
 
Manor Theater
(1943) 105 S. Main Remodeled in 1946 by Architectural firm Boller Brothers of Kansas City and Los Angeles.
 
Spiral Theater
116 N. Main Built by Martin J Bengstrom 1931.

Star View Drive In Theater
March 16, 1949  Built by CM Aspach & V C Anderson (Vern) McPherson on a 10 acre tract.  It parked 400 cars and had a 32 X 40 foot screen.  9 ramps 36 feet apart. Located at the junction of US81 bypass and US81 just north of McPherson.  Manager was A C Smith Jr. Employees Jack Ester and J B Wiggins.  Closed 1985 (Proprietor Doil Boothe) and demolished in 1988.  Kelly Automotive is located there.

The Fine Arts Group was founded in 1982 with the re-opening of the 1938 Fine Arts Theatre in Mission, Kansas. Its purpose was to exhibit and promote first run and specialized programs not available in mall theaters. No other history available at this time.
